About Egg Moon Studio

Martin Dodd @EggMoonStudio & Telescope

I’ve always been fascinated by science and technology from an early age. After seeing Saturn as a tiny cosmic jewel through my first small telescope, I was hooked. I began my career at the Met Office, observing and mapping weather conditions at international airports — including a stint in the Falkland Islands, where the dark skies were truly spectacular.

I went on to earn a BSc (Hons) degree in Astrophysics and Astronomy at the University of Central Lancashire, with a dissertation on galactic spectra. My work was published in the Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society (Ref. Sansom A. C., Peace G., Dodd M., 1994, MNRAS, 271, 39, Line-Strength Gradients in the Bulge Components of NGC 3190 and 1023). I later studied Software Technology at Liverpool University and have since worked as a software engineer across both private and public sector organisations.

After several years in software development, I decided to combine my experience in meteorology, astronomy, and software engineering by creating Egg Moon Studio. The goal was simple — to bring together my professional skills and personal passions. The result was Scope Nights: Astronomy Weather, born from my frustration with conventional weather apps that didn’t serve astronomers’ needs for accurate night-time observing forecasts.

Since its release, Scope Nights has received excellent reviews from respected astronomy magazines and even earned an award from Sky & Telescope. I’ve been lucky to receive lots of positive feedback from astronomers around the world, which continues to shape the app’s evolution.

Alongside app development, I maintain an interest in astrophysics, astrophotography, and conceptual physics research — areas that keep me connected to the science that first inspired me. Egg Moon Studio serves as a creative space for exploring how technology, observation, and physics can work together to make astronomy more accessible and enjoyable.
